bags & books

Dear friends, if you can believe it, it's December. The gift giving season is upon us and to be honest, finding the perfect gift can be a real challenge. I'm often finding myself thinking, "this would be PERFECT for this person" but only because I like it for myself!

Since becoming a sort adult, the novelty of gifting has changed - I'm no longer waiting for birthdays or Christmas for things on my wish list. I just go out and buy them, from me to me. And this month, it's been bags and books.

It's no secret I have a thing for bags. This bag from Melbourne brand Naked Vice is perfect for keeping it minimal and practical. It's made from real leather, is so soft, and goes with everything. Naked Vice have so many other chic bags and wallets, I'll definitely be looking at their website for a while!

The Flower Addict is one I have not been able to put down. It's this stunning, thick coffee table book with glossy pages and surreal photography. Anyone who knows me / comes to my apartment knows my love for flowers, and how I always try and have fresh blooms in my space. The Flower Addict marks the amazing portfolio of Saskia Havekes, who runs Grandiflora and is one of Sydney's most famous florists. The sheer creativity and opulence of the installations and designs inspires me every time I pour over the pages.

I hope your days are chic and inspiring.

Spring 2014 ASOS favourite

After trawling through the many pages of the ASOS bag category (35 to be exact!) I have picked my 8 favourite clutch bags for the season of Spring.

I absolutely love the Scallop clutches - I have seen Scallop edged shorts and skirts but never in a bag. My second favourite is the Cat bag, for all the cat ladies out there!

the return of the little black bag

When it comes to handbags, especially handbags that look similar to really expensive, yet very nice handbags, I am completely powerless. I am slowly going through the ones in my collection and donating the ones I don't use anymore, and selling the ones that would be worth a dollar or more. On my most recent shopping trip with Clarissa, we stalked the bags we are (im)patiently waiting to acquire- and as soon as I saw this bag, I knew I had to have it to tide me over.

This Mini Stud Base Tote by Colette Hayman is very similar to the very desirable Alexander Wang 'Rocky.' I have seen this bag online, and on the street, and it's a divine bag. I wanted to update my little black bag, and decided this was the perfect, cheaper option until the time is right to pounce on the beauty I have been eyeing off for months. This bag is a fraction of the price of a Rocky, however it cannot be compared in quality- I find that you very much get what you pay for when it comes to more 'costume' purchases such as bags, shoes, and jewellery. I'm more than happy to pay minimal when it comes to things like accessories, but will compromise on less things I know I will want a decent use out of.

This piece comes in three colours- black, cobalt blue and tan- and the hardware comes in gold on the black and tan, and silver on the cobalt blue. I am going to road test this bad boy this week and give my thoughts in an updated review this coming weekend. I am excited to pair this with my long black winter coat and cute flats for work, and a leather jacket and boots for the coming weekend.
I'll be posting a outfit look for daily wear to night wear post next week to go with this piece, which I am really excited for.

I can't wait to rock this bag in the concrete jungle.

☼ Summer bags haul ☼

It's a haul, y'all!

Since Summer has almost come and gone, and the weather is slowly winding down into rain and cold, I figure it was a good time to gather up my favourite bags from the past season, and have a slice of summer with me whenever they're being used.

Metal Tab Zip Base Bucket Bag- Colette by Colette Hayman Bags $44.95

This is my most recent purchase, and I've used this bag for the last couple of days. It featured in my most recent 'the week that was' post, and I've used it for going to the beach and just everyday use. The story goes that I was given a Colette gift voucher for $50 over Christmas, and I'm not usually one to shop at Colette, simply because I'm more likely to buy bags from a store like Sportsgirl or Myer, or higher end brands, just because I know that they're trust worthy and have good quality products. I'm surprisingly picky when it comes to bags, simply because I went through the stage of buying cheap products, like shoes, bags and costume jewellery, and all that ended up happening was that the products would last me perhaps two or three uses, and would fall apart. So I figured the sensible thing to do was save up and spend money on good quality things you're going to want to use for than a few times, and on the rare occasion, buy bits and pieces that might not last you a few uses.

Anyways, I had this gift voucher from a secret Santa, and I went past Colette during my work break and thought I might as well have a look at what they had inside. Now I don't have any issue with Colette bags, but I don't usually buy from them as much as I used to. I have two notable bags from Colette, one black and tan tote and the other black and olive tote, which have been great bags, but I got over them quickly just because they were very seasonal, which I suppose is a risk you take with purchases like that. This bag was the first that caught my eye, just because the colour combination was really interesting and very summer/spring appropriate in terms of style and colour palette. They had the same style but in all black, and goodness knows I have enough black bags in my wardrobe, so the apricot and ivory colours sold it for me.

As you can see, there is gold detailing on the bag itself, including the zipper and tabs, and on the handle. It's a great size, and the bucket shape is a very comfortable cut to wear. For a casual look, I would match this with a white button down shirt, light blue denim jeans, comfy flats and gold jewellery. I would recommend this bag for those who like to have plenty of space for things in their handbag, and enjoy a mix of neutral and pastel colours.

Tropicana Tassel Clutch- Rubi Shoes/Cotton On

You might recognise this clutch from the post I made a couple of weeks back when I attended 'fugitive space'- this bag has been used the most in the time I have had it, and it was bought to go with my outfit which I wore to the exhibition. This bag is from Rubi Shoes, and I wasn't able to find it online, so it may still be available in some stores. I recall spending around $20 on it, so not too expensive.

I fell in love with the vibrancy and retro feel of this piece- it's something you'd see with a really cute sunflower dress in the 80's. The tassel detailing is very cute, and is attached to the zipper. The clutch is made of cotton, and holds a fair amount despite its small size. I styled this clutch with a black t-shirt, with a floral print pencil skirt and white bermuda pumps for the exhibition. For a more casual look, I would match this with a grey or neutral colour maxi dress, with brown sandals.

Nadine Quilt Crossbody- Colette by Colette Hayman $22.95

This was a very generous Christmas gift from my honey, and it's been one of the most useful bags I own. It's a smaller crossover body style bag, with silver detailing and quilting patterns. I've used this bags on nights out and family functions, and can easily cross over from a casual to an evening time bag, it's pretty versatile. The quilting reminds me of Chanel, but with a considerably smaller price tag.

The strap is quite long, as you can see in the image above, and the bag size itself is a comfortable square shape. It easily fits my phone, wallet, keys, coin purse- enough to have the essentials in your bag and to not feel like you're lugging it around.

Here's a close up of the silver detailing and quilting pattern. I have matched this bag with casual and dressy styles- my go to is a pair of black treated pants, t-shirt and my grey converse sneakers, or for a more dressy look, pairing this with a simple black dress, silver accessories and black shoes works every single time.

I hope you have enjoyed my haul and reviews- I was pleasantly surprised with how durable each of these bags are despite my past experience with products that have been on the less expensive side.

Stay tuned for my summer clothing haul coming up in the next few days!

Also, all of these bags were purchased by myself, they were not given to me by any of the companies or brands mentioned in this post. This haul and review are my own personal opinion, and hasn't been written in conjunction with sponsorship or reimbursement from any mentioned companies, brands or affiliates.

| The week that was | 2.09.2013 |

Sorry did I read that right? It's September ALREADY?? I will be finished with university for the year in less than two months hOW-
Anyways, I'm terribly sorry that this weekly wrap up is a day late- I promise it's not going to become a habit, I had two major assignments to hand in today and over the weekend, & it all just got rather busy.
Any who, here is the weekly wrap up!

Spring has officially sprung! There are heaps of flowering jasmine trees in my neighbourhood, and it always smells amazing.

You may recognise a snippet of this pic from earlier posts- this was a behind the scenes shot from a photoshoot I helped out Emily-May with. She has these adorable little potted plants & a veggie patch at her place. It's such a homely place, with cats!

Me running errands over the weekend with Mark- I'm so grateful for his company, and having a bag that happens to fit everything I need!

I caught up with a darling friend of mine, Lucy, over the weekend amidst all the chaos. I've known her for about two years now, & she is just this amazing person. She's the kind of friend who you can talk to all the time, & when you do eventually catch up, it's as if no time has passed at all. She's studying to be a graphic designer, and works at a fashion label already which is totally awesome and fabulous. She's been such a rock to me over the last two years, & I love her so dearly.

I think I sometimes forget how beautiful Sydney is. This is the Queen Victoria Building, and a place I go to a lot as I get my bus home from Manly around here. The city is always bustling with people and cars and traffic, but for some reason when I see this picture, I remember feeling peaceful when I took it. Mark was nearby, he's the peace in the chaos.

In the midst of this week I also managed to take some photos for yellow magazine- the accompanying article is a commentary on the changing trends of fashion, & how accessories have maintained a level of demand despite such trends. Below are some snaps from the shoot- shoes and necklaces are featured:

I hope this longer post has made up for my lateness! I have a whole bunch of hauls to go up this week- this week isn't nearly as hectic, so I'll have some more time to blog!

Stay tuned! x

| 24.07.2013 | Jewellery, bag & succulents.

Here I am, at my final week of a two month university holiday- it's actually gone by so quickly, and spending the majority of my week in Manly with Mark has been a big learning experience; living with someone else is a mixed bag, but it's brought us closer as best friends and as a couple. We have already started looking at properties in the area, and are planning for the next few months ahead.

Below is a snapshot of my jewellery purchases over the last few weeks. I liked how all these pieces fit together in their styles- it might just be because Spring is on it's way, but the pretty colours & delicate chains are my favourite for the coming season.

Cobalt Semi Precious Lapis Gold Necklace- Lovisa

The photo really doesn't do the Lapis patter justice at all! I've always liked the semi precious stone look- amethyst, rose quartz, opal- all favourites of mine. This pendant is loose inside the U-bend frame and hanging off a medium length chain. I would style this gorgeous colour with a white blouse and leather pants with gold accessories.

Cobalt Semi Precious Lapis Gold Faceted Pendant- Lovisa

This photo was taken quite close up, so it does look large but in reality it's about the size of a five cent piece. It's on a long fine gold chain and is a cute necklace to match with the above pendant.

Cobalt Semi Precious Lapis Gold Ring- Lovisa

This is more of a statement ring, it is quite large but again with the colour- this one has gold marble through it and blue and gold in my opinion are a winning combination. I really like the oblong shape of it too, very different.

Turquoise Double Arrow Pendant- Lovisa

I totally blame the Catching Fire trailer for these arrow related purchases! The mint colour is a favourite of mine, and reminds me of something you'd wear with a paisley print.

Turquoise Aztec Arrow Gold Pendant- Lovisa

This reminded me of something you'd find on a totem pole & something military related- all of which makes me happy.

Gold Linked Knot Pendant- Lovisa

I love this because it made me think of something my grandmother would wear- it's elegant and on a very long chain and looks great with a simple outfit. Black, white and gold are always a winning combination.

Luxe Links Pink Rosette Chain Bracelet

I've had my eye on this for a while & finally caved- I love the layered up look with a statement watch, and this bracelet is just enough to style it. And the little roses are cute and ready made for Spring.

Indie Tote in Black- Sportsgirl

I met up with a friend of mine a few weeks ago and she had this bag with her & it's such a good sized staple piece. It's beyond spacious and fits everything I would need every day.

And lastly, I saw this very pretty sight when I was walking to work. This is half the reason I love being in Manly- the locals love their succulents!

Long post today, hope you're having an awesome day, and don't forget to appreciate the beautiful things around you. Take heaps of pretty pictures & keep them forever.

Stay tuned. x

Catch ups & shopping haul with Emily-May (midgeymay)! | 13.07.2013

Okay so something pretty damn magical happened today- the planets aligned & I finally got to catch up with this lovely lady today!

This is my dear friend, Emily-May, also known as midgeymay. Her delightful blog features reviews, hauls, unboxing & all other manners of loveliness, including her heavenly cat Cacifier. You can experience her loveliness here.

Emily-May & I go to university together- we have been in the same classes for the last semester, trekked the streets of Melbourne together, and amazingly, will be together in the Graduation Show project taking place in the coming semester. She, like me, has spent the last two months of holidays working her butt off, so we were extremely fortunate to have a day off together. Emily-May was very keen to go to the make up counters in the Pitt Street Myer, & I of course would never one to pass up the chance to go into the city, so that was the imminent plan. And boy, what a plan it was. Below is a small snapshot of today's purchases:

We met around lunch time & hit QVB for little bits and pieces- we ended up first buying at Sportsgirl with their awesome accessories & handbags (oh the handbags!) & I ended up getting a black handbag, as shown below:

Madison Push Lock Bag at Sportsgirl

After pottering through card shops, we slowly made our way around to Pitt Street. Emily-May was very keen to check out the MECCA Cosmetics display, & got a bit excited about their perfumes, which, of course, smelt heavenly-

We made our way around to the Illamasqua (don't ask me how to pronounce it, I can barely spell it!) which was a brand I hadn't heard of- but Emily-May, being the English rose she is, mentioned that she had seen someone on Youtube talking about it, & turns out, in true form, is an English brand. Emily-May wanted to check out their foundations after liking what she saw on said Youtube review, & we chatted with the young lady at the counter. She was super helpful & promptly matched Em's skin tone with a very nice foundation on top of a primer. The difference the foundation made, and having a comparison of one side of her face being her usual make up, and the other being the Illamasqua, was amazing-Em's got flawless skin tone and colour, & she was beaming with the way the foundation was sitting on her skin.

I was curious & asked the Illamasqua lady to colour match me, & both Emily-May and myself were amazed at the difference between each foundation. I honestly didn't think my skin could have ever looked as natural and dewy- it has quite a decent amount of coverage without even using a concealer, is very light on my skin & matches my natural skin tones perfectly- and to top this, the foundation and primer, which Em & I both purchased for ourselves, were actually cheaper than most drug store foundations. I'm all for anyone using whatever brands work for them, & that the most expensive products don't necessarily do a better job than lower priced ones, but after having Illamasqua on my skin, I'd be hard pressed to find another foundation that does a better job. The only set back with Illamasqua is that the only make up counter they have in Sydney is at the Pitt Street Myer, so if you wanted to try out their products you'd have to go into that store. Both the skin base foundation and skin primer are shown below:

Whilst on the coat tails of make up, we went around to Priceline- Emily-May snagged plenty of bargains, & I got the Artiste Professional Foundation/Concealer Brush 50, and the Savvy by DB Perfect Finish Loose Powder in 01 Translucent, both items are shown below:

& just because we're a huge believer in signs, Em got the both of us a set of these:

Rimmel Instant Art Press On Colour in London Style at Priceline.
(I will completely and utterly take this as a sign.)

After all this shopping, we called in at Wagamama & got some amazing grub- I managed to take this picture of Emily-May's Chicken Teriyaki before it was 'destroyed'- her words!

Chicken Teriyaki before the destruction!

And lastly, a very sweet gesture from the lovely lady- a belated birthday gift! Emily-May has the most exceptional taste in everything, & she was sweet enough to get me a beautiful notebook with the most seductive paper stock. The cover has got a light layer of pastel squares & it's beautiful:

The beautiful card.

Quite the big post today! I'm working less this week, so I will be doing a Birthday haul, featuring Emily-May & my good buddy Clarissa.

Stay tuned. x
